Intros

1. A cruel and mentally inhibited dictator leaves a country in shambles. After the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989, citizens of Romania were left to reassemble what was left of their broken country. In an effort to build a supreme race, Ceausescu had heavily taxed those with less than five children. As a result, parents found themselves with more mouths than they were able to feed. As a last resort, many parents turned their children over to the government, hoping that at least they’d get a meal a day. As the orphanages were filled beyond their limits, children’s minimal physical needs were met, but they did not receive the attention needed to grow in all aspects of development. Almost two decades later, Romania continues to feel the effect of this disaster and children continue to be under-stimulated and unloved. These children need stimuli that is inexpensive and easily accessible and that will challenge their minds, build interactions, evoke emotion, and encourage at least minimal physical activity daily. All of these requirements and be filled by the introduction of music.

2. Imagine that you’ve lived all 12 years of your life on the same mattress. Yours is lined up in a row of 100 identical beds housing 100 identical children. Yes, you are usually fed and kept warm. But you have never been able to explore, to think. You don’t have the opportunity to stimulate your brain, develop emotional attachments, or even move beyond the confines of your mattress. Children are leashed to their beds if they try to roam. Many children have resorted to rocking or other repetitive movements as a rudimentary way to activate their brains. This is the situation of thousands of children in Romanian orphanages. These children need stimuli that will promote development of the brain as well as emotional and social functions. Music has the potential to provide the necessary stimulus for healthy growth. The introduction of music to under-stimulated orphans would support growth in the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical domains.

3 sources

Here are three sources on the topic of dieting of varying degrees of reliability. The first is "Why Diets Fail- Expert Diet Advice as a cause of Diet Failure" from the American Psychologist Journal. This is a very reliable source because it is from an academic journal and because the author quotes a number of reliable sources to back up his argument.
The second most reliable source is an article from Fox News called "High Calcium Diet Keeps the Weight Off." This article is moderately reliable because it is from a legitimate organization (Fox News) but it is not peer reviewed so it isn't as reliable as the first source.
My least reliable source is Diet page on the Wikipedia site. This source would not be reliable enough to use in a paper because it is by a number of authors and none of the information is sited or verifiable.

Rhetoric in Politics

In Kennedy's commercial, http://www.livingroomcandidate.org/commercials/1960 they use a catchy jingle, repetition, to motivate their audience, every day Americans.
The jingle is easy to get stuck in your head; I was singing it after I watched it. Also, the jingle is not just gibberish; it brings up relevant qualities in Kennedy: he's experienced, open to new ideas, and ready to take action. The jingle then puts the onus on the audience. They repeat the line "It's up to you. It's up to you. It's strictly up to you."
This commercial uses lots of repetition to motivate their audience. They know that ven if they make good points, its useless if no one remembers the ad or who it was about. This is probably why they say the name Kennedy 27 times in a 60 second ad and have his name at least 40 additional times on the screen. I think they're trying to get a point across...

Rhetoric in Conference

Lawrence E. Corbridge used Rhetorical devices to emphasize his point.
He used repetition to get his point across. He said, "Either we drink and never thirst or don't and foolishly remain thirsty." Then repeated this structure a number of time with the example of food, the spirit, obedience, and others.
He has ethos because he is a general authority in the church. But he builds his ethical appeal even more by quoting directly from the scriptures, especially the direct words of Christ. As the Savior and King of the universe, he can definitely make a strong ethical appeal.
Elder Corbridge also appeals to the emotions of his audience. He says that we may feel like we can't follow Christ because he's perfect and we are not. This shows his audience that he understands what they may be feeling. Now that he and his audience are on the same level, he can turn it around and say "but you don't need to feel that way because..."
He makes a bold blanket statement, "Nothing is of greater worth than the supernal gift of the Holy Ghost." And then he backs up this claim with scriptural references (ethos) as well as a logical train of thought (logos). All in all, he uses rhetoric well to pull in his audience and convey his message.

Put a Cap on the Cold

There's nothing worse than spending an hour putting together an adorable outfit and doing your hair only to find out that its cold outside. You dejectedly throw on a hoodie, feeling like you just finger-painted on a masterpiece. But worse still, you dread arriving at class and having to take off the sweatshirt, knowing your hair will be disheveled and static-y- and its just another bad hair day.
If this is you, it doesn't have to be. You can keep out the cold and still look great at the same time! The solution is a stylish hat. Whether your going to school, or to something a little nicer, you can find a hat to match any outfit. And since so much heat escapes from one's head, a hat will keep you nice and warm.
A hat is a classy addition to a stylish outfit, so you can leave the hat on all day and you won't have to worry about hat hair. Or better yet, having a bad hair day? A hat is a great way to mask it with flair!
You can find hats at any store, with a wide range of prices. You can get a cute hat for just 10 bucks! From K-mart to Nordstrom, there's a great hat waiting for you at your favorite store. So you better stop reading this right now and go out and buy it before someone else does- then you'll never have to worry about the weather cramping your style again!

Why my hometown is the best

West Linn, Oregon is the best place in the world.
For starters: its beautiful! Everything is green and hilly and the mountains are beautiful and snow-capped in the distance- none of this "mountains right outside my backdoor" craziness! Provo mountains are so close they make you claustrophobic. And the rain in Oregon is the best in the world- just a little chilly, clear and fresh. The smell of clean rain is the best in the world.
West Linn has the best weather in the world. The rain is sporadic so the weather will always be a surprise when you go outside. Its great because if you're getting tired of the rain, it'll probably be gone within an hour, and the same is true for the sun. Also we get about an inch of snow a year which makes that one snow day super special. They don't have snow plows so the slightest snow means no school.

What I ...love... most about BYU

Walking from class to class, I love seeing so many new faces. I love having the opportunity to meet someone new everytime I walk into Chemistry class. Back in high school, you'd get your class schedule crossing your fingers that your friends would be in all your classes and that you wouldn't get stuck with a class full of jocks or some other tabooed clique. At BYU there are no unspoken rules about who you can and cannot talk to. Every stranger is the same blank slate of possiblity. Any one of them would be happy to have a friendly conversation with you or at least introduce themselves. Even among strangers, you're surrounded by people with the same morals and beliefs as you. Meeting new people is easy at BYU, and thanks to the sheer size of the school, you have the opportunity to make a new friend every day.
